The magnetic gasket around each Sub-Zero door does quiet, constant work. A little cleaning and an occasional paper test can spare you a service visit that never needed to happen.
Every Sub-Zero door closes against a soft magnetic gasket. When that strip presses evenly against the cabinet, cold air stays where it belongs and the compressor gets regular rest. When it stops pressing evenly, the system works longer to hold temperature, and a homeowner usually notices only after the food or the ice tells them something is off. The encouraging part is that gasket care takes minutes and needs no tools.
Kitchen grease, spilled juice and crumbs settle into the folds of the gasket. That film keeps the strip from flattening against the frame, even when the rubber itself is still in good shape. A soft cloth with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap is enough. Run it along the full length of each door, get into the folds, then dry the strip so nothing sticky is left behind. Skip harsh cleaners and abrasive pads; they can dry out the material.
To see whether a gasket still grips, close the door on a dollar bill or a strip of paper and pull it out slowly. You should feel steady drag. Repeat the test at several points on each side, including the hinge side and the corners. A spot where the paper slides out freely is a spot where warm kitchen air is getting in.
Leaving a door propped open for a long stretch, such as during a move, a deep clean or a remodel, lets the strip lose its shape faster than everyday opening and closing ever would. If you need the door open for a while, close it again as soon as the job allows.
A tear, a strip that stays pressed flat, or one that fails the paper test after cleaning will not recover on its own. At that point the gasket needs replacement, and we can check the door alignment at the same visit.
