Heavy Frost in a Sub-Zero Freezer Column: Causes and Fixes

Thick frost that keeps coming back in a Sub-Zero freezer column usually means warm, humid air is getting in or a sensor is misreading. Here is how to tell.

A thin, even layer of frost in a freezer is normal. A thick crust that returns soon after you scrape it away is not. In a Sub-Zero freezer column, heavy frost almost always comes from one of two places: moist air sneaking in from the kitchen, or a control that is being told to cool harder than necessary.

Where the Moisture Comes From

Frost is water vapor from the room that freezes on cold surfaces. In a humid Houston kitchen there is plenty of it. The usual entry point is a door gasket that has torn, flattened or picked up a film of grime. Run a paper test along all four sides. Look for frost concentrated near one edge of the door; that often marks the weak spot.

Habits matter too. Long open-door sessions while loading groceries, a drawer that does not close completely or a package pressed against the door can let in as much damp air as a worn gasket.

When the Cause Is a Sensor

If the gasket passes and the door closes properly, the next suspect is a temperature sensor giving the wrong reading. A sensor that reports the freezer as warmer than it is can keep the system running longer than needed. Frost builds as a side effect, and food may feel harder-frozen than usual. On some models a code on the display will appear, though not always.

What Not to Do

Do not chip at frost with knives or sharp tools; puncturing an evaporator or a line turns a simple repair into a sealed system job. Scraping by hand only resets the clock without fixing the cause.
