This one shows up on Classic Built-In models with electronic control such as the BI-36UFD/S and BI-36U/S. The 2 in the middle points to the freezer, and 38 means the power output that drives the freezer variable-speed compressor reported an error, so the board is no longer communicating with that compressor. Expect the freezer to lose temperature, ice production to slow or stop, and frozen food to soften if the condition lasts, while the fresh-food side may still cool normally.
1. Record the code and whether the freezer feels warmer than normal. 2. Turn the unit off at the breaker for two minutes and switch it back on. 3. Avoid opening the freezer so the cold holds longer. 4. If the code returns, pack frozen food into a cooler with ice or move it to another freezer, then contact us.
On these BI models the freezer has its own compressor. 60-2-38 points to that compressor's drive circuit, so the freezer warms while the refrigerator side, which uses separate cooling, can carry on as usual.
A surge or brownout can upset the drive or the board output that feeds it. A breaker reset sometimes clears a one-off event. A code that keeps coming back points to a part that needs testing.
We inspect the harness, test the drive and confirm the board output under power. You get a written price before we start, and our workmanship is covered for 30 days.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
