On legacy PRO 48 models such as the Sub-Zero 648PRO and 648PROG, code 84 points to the wiring of the variable-speed compressor in zone X, where X is 1, 3 or 4. The compressor may be perfectly healthy, yet the connection between it and its controller is not carrying the signal or power the control expects. That zone can stop cooling, start and stop repeatedly, or run unevenly. The display shows 84 together with the zone number, and temperatures in that zone are usually the first thing to drift.
1) Write down the zone number displayed with code 84. 2) Confirm the breaker for the refrigerator has not tripped. 3) Place a thermometer in the affected zone and check it twice a day. 4) Shift perishables elsewhere if that zone climbs past 40°F or 0°F for a freezer. 5) Keep the door shut and book a visit.
Not by itself. Code 84 points to the wiring between the variable-speed controller and the compressor in that zone. Restoring a clean connection often brings cooling back with the original compressor still in place.
The machine compartment runs warm, and the compressor vibrates every time it starts. Over many years that combination can loosen terminals, discolor plugs, and crack insulation near the connection point.
We power the unit down, inspect the harness and terminals for zone X, repair or replace what is damaged, then run the zone to confirm it cools. The written price comes before any work.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
