One Zone Warm on a Dual-Zone Sub-Zero Wine Unit: What It Means

When only one zone of a Sub-Zero dual-zone wine unit drifts, the trouble is usually limited to that side. Here is how to protect your bottles and narrow it down.

A dual-zone Sub-Zero wine unit with one zone holding steady and the other drifting can look confusing at first. In practice it is a helpful clue. Each zone has its own sensor and its own temperature control, so a problem on one side often stays on that side.

Why the Zones Behave Separately

Sub-Zero designed its integrated wine storage to report each zone on its own. When something goes wrong, the code on the display usually identifies which zone is involved. That tells the technician where to start before a panel comes off, and it tells you which bottles may need attention.

Using the Healthy Zone Meanwhile

In most cases the unaffected zone can keep storing wine normally while the other side waits for service. If you have room, move the most valuable bottles from the warm zone into the steady one, as long as its setting suits them. Otherwise, a cool, dark and stable spot in the house is the next best place.

Temperature Drift Versus Long Run Time

Two patterns are worth telling apart. In one, the zone simply reads warmer than its setting. In the other, the cooling for that zone seems to run constantly, with the fan or compressor rarely resting. Sub-Zero reports these as separate kinds of codes, and they tend to lead to different repairs. Note which one you see.

Before you call, a few owner checks are worth doing:

  • Restart the unit at the breaker after about 30 seconds off.
  • Test the gasket on the affected door with a strip of paper.
  • Make sure racks and bottles are not stopping the door from sealing.

Getting It Repaired

Single-zone problems are often a contained repair, such as a sensor, a fan or a gasket. We confirm by testing and quote in writing first. Visit our Sub-Zero wine storage repair page and our service area page.
