Sub-Zero 600 Series units such as the 650/F and 685, along with 700 Series, 736 and IC-27 integrated models like the 700TCI, use code 21 for a defrost overheat. The defrost heater ran and the area got hotter than it should before shutting off. On the older 648PRO, code 21 tells the technician to check the defrost bi-metal in zone X, where X is 1, 3 or 4. You may notice water on the floor of the freezer, unusual warmth after a defrost, or icing on the ceiling of the compartment.
1) Wipe any water from the compartment floor and check the drain area. 2) Keep the doors closed. 3) Note the zone number on a 648PRO. 4) Watch for repeated warm periods in the freezer. 5) Call us before the issue damages stored food.
The device that should end defrost, a terminator or bi-metal, did not open in time, so the heater kept running. That warms the compartment more than intended and can leave extra meltwater.
Repeated overheating can partly thaw frozen items stored near the coil. Moving sensitive food to another freezer and booking service soon is the sensible approach.
We check the defrost bi-metal for the zone shown, confirm the heater and wiring, then replace what tests bad. Nothing starts until you have signed off on the written price.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
