Code 86 on the Sub-Zero 648PRO and 648PROG, the older PRO 48 models, is a communication problem between the main control and the variable-speed controller for zone X. The service path is to check the communication wiring first and, if that is sound, replace the VS controller for that zone. When messages stop getting through, the compressor for that zone may not respond to cooling requests. The display shows 86 with the zone number, and the matching section slowly warms while the other zones may behave normally.
1) Note the zone number with the code. 2) Shut off power at the breaker for two minutes, then restore it. 3) Watch whether the zone starts cooling again within an hour. 4) Keep that zone closed and move sensitive items if it warms. 5) Schedule a visit if 86 returns.
The main control sends commands to each zone's variable-speed controller over dedicated wiring. Code 86 means those commands are not reaching the controller for the zone shown, or its replies are not coming back.
Possibly, but not always. A loose plug or corroded pin produces the same code, so we test the wiring before recommending a controller for that zone.
The affected zone may lose cooling, so book soon and move food if needed. We arrive with a plan, explain the findings, and price the repair in writing first.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
