What H2-LO means

On Sub-Zero Classic Built-In models with a water dispenser, such as the BI-36UFD/S or BI-48SD/S, H2-LO tells you the dispenser has put itself into a safety lock. The control does this after about one gallon leaves the dispenser within 15 minutes, or when the water valve has stayed energized for 150 seconds without a break. You will see H2-LO on the display and the paddle stops delivering water, while cooling and ice production carry on as usual.

Common causes of H2-LO

  • A long fill, such as a large pitcher or pot, that pushed past the one-gallon limit in 15 minutes
  • The dispenser paddle held in or sticking, keeping the valve energized past 150 seconds
  • A water valve that stays energized after the paddle is released
  • A control board that misreads how long the valve has been open
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Stop dispensing and check that the paddle springs back freely. 2. Wipe away any ice chips or residue around the paddle. 3. Wait about 15 minutes so the lock can time out. 4. If the code stays, switch the refrigerator breaker off for one minute, then back on. 5. For big containers, fill in short rounds rather than one long pour.

! Why to stop there
  • If the valve stays energized on its own, water can keep running after you let go
  • The valve and control board sit behind panels that carry line voltage
  • Repeated lockouts with normal use point to a part that needs a meter, not a reset
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

H2-LOH2-LO questions
Why did H2-LO appear when I was only filling a pot?

The lock counts volume, not intent. Roughly one gallon inside 15 minutes trips it, so a stockpot or several pitchers in a row can do it. Pause, let it time out, and the dispenser usually works again.

Can H2-LO mean something is actually broken on my BI-36UFD/S?

Yes, when it shows up after short pours. A paddle that sticks or a valve that stays energized past 150 seconds triggers the same lock. We check the paddle switch, the valve and the board signal, then quote a written price before any work.

Does the rest of the refrigerator keep working during the lock?

It does. Only the water side is held. Cooling, the freezer and the ice maker run normally, so your food stays safe while you wait or while we schedule a visit.
