What 10-1-01 means

Owners of Classic Built-In refrigerators such as the BI-36U/S, and of Designer columns like the DEC3050R, may see 10-1-01. On the Classic BI it reports a shorted refrigerator cabinet thermistor; on Designer it reports a shorted Zone 1 cabinet thermistor. A shorted sensor sends a reading far outside what the board expects, so the control ignores it and runs on a fallback pattern. The refrigerator section can then hold an uneven temperature.

Common causes of 10-1-01

  • Moisture bridging the thermistor connection
  • Wiring insulation damaged where it runs behind a panel
  • A shorted cabinet thermistor
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Wipe up any water or ice inside the refrigerator section. 2. Confirm the door closes fully and nothing blocks the seal. 3. Do a single breaker reset. 4. Keep a thermometer inside and note the reading twice a day. 5. Book a visit if the code comes back.

! Why to stop there
  • Tracing a short requires probing behind interior panels
  • Wet wiring can point to a drain or seal problem that also needs repair
  • Sensors differ between Classic BI and Designer units
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

Why would a sensor short out inside a refrigerator?

Most often moisture reaches the plug or the wire gets nicked behind a panel. Sometimes the sensor simply wears out. We check all three in order, starting with the connection.

Is 10-1-01 the same on my BI-36UFD/S and a Designer unit?

The idea matches but the name changes. Classic BI calls it the refrigerator cabinet thermistor, Designer calls it the Zone 1 cabinet thermistor. Both readings are shorted.

Can I keep using the refrigerator?

Usually yes, with caution. The board runs on a backup timing pattern, so keep a thermometer inside and move sensitive items to a cooler if it climbs above 40 degrees.
