When a Classic BI unit like the BI-36U/S or a Designer integrated model such as the DEC3050R shows 20-2-50, its defrost heater is open, meaning the circuit has no continuity and the heater cannot warm the coil. On the BI this is the freezer heater; on Designer units it is the Zone 2 heater. Since defrost cannot melt the ice, a white frost layer builds on the evaporator, airflow drops and the freezer, then the fresh food side, slowly warm up.
1. Look through the freezer for heavy frost on the back panel and mention it when you call. 2. Do not chip at ice inside the cabinet; sharp tools can puncture tubing. 3. Keep the door closed and avoid adding large loads of unfrozen food. 4. A breaker reset will not fix an open heater, so skip it and schedule a visit.
On many BI and Designer setups, cold air for the fresh food area also depends on a clear evaporator. When the open heater stops defrost, ice blocks airflow and both sections can drift warm.
Turning the unit off for a day may melt the ice and buy time, but the heater remains open and the code returns. It is a temporary measure only, not a repair.
Most heater replacements take one visit once the coil is clear, though heavy ice can add time. We quote the job in writing before starting, and the labor carries our 30-day workmanship warranty.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
