What 35-R-33 means

Classic BI units, among them the BI-36U/S and BI-36UFD/S, use 35-R-33 when the refrigerator evaporator fan runs below its speed setting. This fan circulates cold air across the fresh food evaporator. When it slows, the fresh food section warms, produce may wilt, and you might hear a softer or uneven whir near the back of the compartment. The freezer is usually fine because it has its own system.

Common causes of 35-R-33

  • Refrigerator evaporator fan motor slowing
  • Frost on the fresh food evaporator dragging the blade
  • Packaging or food blocking the fan cover
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Move items away from the back wall of the fresh food section. 2. Check for frost on the back panel and mention it when you call. 3. Keep doors closed to let the unit recover. 4. Use a thermometer in the middle shelf to track temperature.

! Why to stop there
  • The fan sits behind interior panels in the fresh food section.
  • Frost on the coil can mean another problem that needs testing.
  • Fan speed must be confirmed before ordering a replacement.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

35-R-3335-R-33 questions
Why only the fresh food section?

Classic BI units run separate cooling systems for each compartment. 35-R-33 relates only to the refrigerator evaporator fan, so the freezer side keeps working while fresh food warms.

Is it safe to wait?

Watch the fresh food temperature. If it stays at or below 40 degrees, you can wait a little. Above that, move perishables to a cooler and call us.

What happens at the visit?

We check fan speed and inspect for frost. You approve a written price before any part is ordered, and our 30-day workmanship warranty covers the repair once the fan runs at full speed again.
