What 90-A-56 means

Code 90-A-56 belongs to Classic BI built-ins such as the BI-36U/S and BI-48SD/S and reports a shorted air filter triac. A triac is a solid-state switch on the control board; this one powers the air filter fan. Because it has shorted, the control can no longer switch that fan on and off properly. The air filter fan may run constantly or not at all, and the control board itself needs attention even though cooling may continue.

Common causes of 90-A-56

  • Shorted triac on the control board that drives the air filter fan
  • Shorted air filter fan that damaged the triac
  • Wiring short on the air filter fan circuit
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Listen near the air filter housing; tell us whether the fan seems to run all the time or not at all. 2. Keep using the unit as long as temperatures stay normal. 3. Do not remove the filter housing or touch the board. 4. Turn off the breaker only if you notice a hot or burning smell.

! Why to stop there
  • The triac is a part of the control board and cannot be replaced separately by owners.
  • If the fan caused the short, replacing only the board leads to repeat damage.
  • Board work requires matching the model and setup.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

90-A-5690-A-56 questions
What is a triac and why does it matter?

A triac is a small electronic switch on the BI control board. With 90-A-56, the one powering the air filter fan has shorted, so the board cannot control that fan anymore.

Why test the fan if the board is the problem?

A shorted fan can damage the triac that feeds it. We test the air filter fan first so a new board is not damaged by the same fan after installation.

How is it repaired?

Usually by replacing the control board, and the fan if it tests bad. You get a written price before any work, backed by our 30-day workmanship warranty.
