With 90-3-56, a Classic Built-In such as the BI-36UFD/S is telling you the condenser fan triac on the control board is shorted. Instead of switching on and off, it is stuck passing power, so the board can no longer control the condenser fan. The fan may run nonstop, even when the compressor is idle, and the board flags the output because it is no longer under its control. Cooling often continues for now.
1. Record 90-3-56. 2. Listen at the toe grille: a fan that never stops is consistent with this code. 3. Turn power off at the breaker for two minutes and back on. 4. Make sure the grille area is clear for airflow. 5. Call us if the code persists.
That fits this code well. A shorted triac keeps the fan powered around the clock, so the board cannot switch it off between compressor cycles, and the fan hum never goes away.
The fan motor will wear faster, and the board has lost control of it. More importantly, whatever shorted the triac may still be in the circuit, so we check the fan wiring as well.
We test the fan circuit for shorts, repair any wiring damage and then replace the board if the triac is confirmed shorted. You approve a written price first, and the work carries our 30-day workmanship warranty.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
