Code 40-2-40 turns up on several Sub-Zero lines: current Designer units such as the DET3050CI and DEC3050R, PRO 36 and PRO 48 models like the PRO4850 and PRO3650, current Classic CL units, and older Classic BI built-ins. On Designer, PRO and CL models it reads Zone 2 excessive runtime; on the BI it is listed for the freezer. Either way, the control kept cooling that zone longer than it allows without getting the expected result. Owners notice a compressor that seems to run nonstop and a zone that feels warmer than its setting.
1. Check that the Zone 2 door or drawer closes fully and the gasket is not folded or torn. 2. Vacuum lint from the toe-kick or top grille and keep the opening clear. 3. If you just loaded a lot of warm groceries, give the unit several hours to recover. 4. Put a thermometer in the zone; if it keeps rising, protect the food and call us.
With 40-2-40, the control has measured that Zone 2 cooling has run past its limit. A door that does not seal or a blocked condenser are the simple causes; if those check out, the cooling system needs testing.
The idea is the same: excessive runtime in Zone 2. On the Classic BI that zone is labeled the freezer, while Designer, PRO and CL models call it Zone 2.
