Classic BI refrigerators such as the BI-36UFD/S and BI-36U/S report 40-B-38 when the baffle FET power output has an error, which the listing describes as a baffle stepper communication problem. The control board drives a motorized baffle that meters cold airflow. If the board cannot talk to the baffle stepper, the baffle can stay stuck in one position. One section then turns too warm or too cold, and the temperatures you set no longer match what you measure.
1. Place a thermometer in each section and check the readings after a few hours. 2. Switch off the breaker for one minute and restore power so the control restarts. 3. Keep shelves and bags away from interior air vents. 4. If the code returns or temperatures drift, plan a visit and protect perishables with a cooler.
It is a small motorized door in the air path. The control opens and closes it to send the right amount of cold air where it is needed. When it stops responding, one section gets too much or too little.
A restart can clear a brief communication glitch. If the board output, the wiring or the stepper is damaged, 40-B-38 usually returns within a day.
We test the board output, the harness and the stepper itself before quoting. You get a written price first, and the repair is covered by our 30-day workmanship warranty.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
