Code 90-A-56 belongs to Classic BI built-ins such as the BI-36U/S and BI-48SD/S and reports a shorted air filter triac. A triac is a solid-state switch on the control board; this one powers the air filter fan. Because it has shorted, the control can no longer switch that fan on and off properly. The air filter fan may run constantly or not at all, and the control board itself needs attention even though cooling may continue.
1. Listen near the air filter housing; tell us whether the fan seems to run all the time or not at all. 2. Keep using the unit as long as temperatures stay normal. 3. Do not remove the filter housing or touch the board. 4. Turn off the breaker only if you notice a hot or burning smell.
A triac is a small electronic switch on the BI control board. With 90-A-56, the one powering the air filter fan has shorted, so the board cannot control that fan anymore.
A shorted fan can damage the triac that feeds it. We test the air filter fan first so a new board is not damaged by the same fan after installation.
