On Sub-Zero legacy undercounter units such as the UC-24R or UC-24BG, code 21 means defrost overheat. During the defrost cycle, the heater warms the coil to clear frost; here the temperature during defrost rose higher than the control allows. Owners may see code 21 on the display and sometimes notice uneven cooling after defrost, or extra moisture where melted frost drains.
1. Note the code and when it appeared. 2. Keep the drawers or door closed so the unit recovers. 3. Try one breaker reset for about a minute. 4. If 21 shows again, book service and avoid repeated resets. 5. Mention any water you see under the unit when you book.
It means defrost overheat. The coil got hotter than expected during defrost, so the control flagged it. It protects the coil and nearby parts from heat damage.
Usually for a short time, but overheating during defrost is not normal. Book service soon so the heater and sensor can be checked. Avoid repeated resets in the meantime.
We test the defrost heater, sensor and control output, then repair what is out of range. You get a written price before work and a 30-day warranty on our workmanship.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
