Sub-Zero 642 Door Seal and Condenser Airflow Repair
Where a 632 draws calls about ice, the 642 draws calls about doors and dust. It is the same 600 Series cabinet family, with the ice maker in the freezer side and the model plate high on the side frame near the hinge, but the pattern we meet most is different.
A 642 that stays cold overnight and warms during the day frequently has a door that no longer closes all the way onto its gasket. The other regular finding is a condenser grille clogged with dust, which robs the compressor of the airflow it needs. Both are cheap to check and expensive to ignore, so we do them before suspecting the compressor.
If parts are needed, they can still be ordered, though legacy ones are slower. You will see a written price first.
The usual causes are a door that no longer seals against the gasket or a dusty condenser. Both add load, so we inspect the seal and clear the grille first.
More often than most owners expect. Dust builds up steadily and restricts airflow, so cleaning it during a service visit is a good habit on this cabinet.
They share the 600 Series cabinet family and the freezer-side ice maker. Our common findings differ, though, with doors and airflow showing up more often on the 642.
