On legacy Designer Wine (IW) units, models like the IW-30CI and IW-30, 40-2-87 points to a zone 2 stepper cooling problem. The control has positioned the zone 2 stepper to cool that zone, but the temperature did not drop as it should. Zone 2 usually reads warmer than set, and the display reads 40 2 87. Zones 1 and 3 may continue cooling as usual.
1. Confirm the zone 2 door shuts and seals completely. 2. Keep the grille area clear. 3. Cut and restore power at the breaker once. 4. Call us if 40-2-87 comes back or zone 2 keeps warming. 5. Shift the most valuable bottles out of zone 2 if it climbs further.
The control has tried to send cooling to zone 2 through its stepper, but the zone did not respond. That can be the stepper, its wiring or the cooling itself.
Sometimes a reset clears it briefly, but if the stepper or cooling is not right, the code usually returns. Book service if it returns after a restart.
